FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is PlainTerms free?

Yes. The free plan includes 30 site checks a month, about one a day, each with the grade, a plain-English summary, and the quoted clause behind every flag. Pro plans check every site automatically and add unlimited change alerts.

Does PlainTerms track which sites I visit?

No. For a site that is already graded, your browser sends only a short hash prefix that many sites share and picks out the result itself. The first check of a site nobody has graded yet sends that site's domain so it can be analyzed, with no account or install identifier attached. That check can also carry up to 10 links to the site's own policies found on the page, with anything after a “?” removed, so they can be read even when the site builds its footer with JavaScript. Checks are paid for with single-use tokens that carry no account ID, and no record of the sites you visit is kept. The extension keeps a 30-day log of every request it makes, so you can verify this yourself.

How accurate are the grades?

Every flag quotes the exact clause it is based on, with a deep link to the source document, and a finding whose quote cannot be found word for word in the document is discarded before it can affect a grade. Every grade also carries a confidence score.

Which languages are supported?

English-language policies are fully supported. Other languages receive best-effort analysis, and accuracy may be lower for non-English documents.

How are grades kept up to date?

Each document is identified by a hash of its text. When a service changes a policy, only the changed document is analyzed again, and the updated grade is served to everyone. Watch a service to be alerted when its terms change.

Is PlainTerms legal advice?

No. PlainTerms summarizes what a document says as of the date it was analyzed. It is information, not legal advice.

Know what you're agreeing to

PlainTerms reads the fine print so you don't have to. Instant grades, evidence quotes, and warnings at the moment you sign up.
