Terms of service

These terms cover your use of the PlainTerms browser extension, website, and API. They are written to be read. If something here is unclear, ask us at [email protected] rather than guessing — we would rather explain a clause than enforce one you did not understand.

By installing the extension or using the service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not install it.

Who we are

PlainTerms is operated by Adwise Partners LLC, a limited liability company registered in New York, United States. “We”, “us”, and “our” mean that company; “you” means the person using the service.

What the service does

PlainTerms reads the legal documents a website publishes — its terms of service, privacy policy, cookie policy, and similar — and produces a letter grade, a list of flagged clauses, and a verbatim quote from the source document for each flag. Each service is analyzed once and the result is shared with every user.

What a grade is, and what it is not

Based on the documents as published. PlainTerms is not legal advice.

This is the most important paragraph on this page. A PlainTerms grade is our opinion, formed by applying a published and inspectable rule set to the text of a document as we found it. It is not legal advice, it is not a statement that a company has broken the law, and it is not a substitute for reading a document yourself or asking a lawyer about it. Do not rely on a grade to decide anything that matters legally or financially.

We work hard to be accurate — every flag must quote the document verbatim, and a flag whose quote cannot be found in the source is discarded before it ever reaches a grade — but we do not warrant that any grade, flag, summary, or quotation is correct, complete, or current. Documents change, and our copy may be older than the one you are being asked to accept. The authoritative version of any company's terms is the one that company publishes.

If you believe a flag is wrong, please tell us through the extension or at [email protected]. We correct mistakes.

Third-party documents and names

The documents PlainTerms analyzes belong to the companies that published them. We quote limited portions of them for the purpose of comment, criticism, and reporting, and we link to the original so you can read it in full. Company names and marks belong to their owners, and we use them to identify the services being described and for no other purpose. Nothing in PlainTerms implies any endorsement by, or affiliation with, the companies it grades.

The comparison of PlainTerms with other products on our website is our hand-checked assessment at the date shown on it, based on publicly available information.

If you own a document we have analyzed and believe we have used it improperly, write to [email protected] with the detail and we will respond promptly. Our crawler's behaviour, and how to exclude it, are documented at /bot.

Acceptable use

You may use PlainTerms for yourself and for your organization's own purposes. You may not:

The extension's source is open for inspection, and reading it, auditing it, and reporting what you find are all explicitly welcome.

Your account

You need an account to use PlainTerms, created by signing in with Google or with a code we email you. You must be at least 13 years old to have one, and at least 18, or have a parent's or guardian's permission, to buy anything. Keep one account per person: each account comes with a free monthly allowance, and accounts created to collect more of it may be closed and their balances voided.

You can delete your account at any time from the extension's settings. Deleting it cancels any subscription at once and removes your balance; unused purchased checks are not refunded except where the law requires it.

Plans and payment

Prices are in United States dollars and exclude any sales tax or VAT, which is added at checkout where it applies.

Payment is processed by Stripe; we never see your card details. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period at the price then in effect until you cancel it, which you can do at any time under Manage subscription in the extension. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and Pro stays active until the end of the period you have paid for. If a renewal payment fails, Pro stays active for seven days while you update your payment method, and then the account returns to Free.

If you are charged in error, or something you paid for does not work, write to [email protected] and we will put it right. Other refunds are given where the law requires them and otherwise at our discretion. When we refund a check pack, the refunded checks are removed from your balance.

We will tell you in the extension before a price change applies to a subscription you already have.

Invites

Each account has an invite code. When someone uses your code within 14 days of creating their account and then uses 20 checks, you receive 25 checks. At your 3rd, 10th, and 25th such invite you also receive 1, 3, and 12 months of Pro, applied as free months on your subscription or, without one, as Pro for that period. Invites that come from accounts created to collect rewards do not count, and rewards earned that way may be removed. We may change or end the invite program; rewards already granted stay yours.

Availability

We aim to keep the service running but do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of it. If we discontinue a paid plan you have bought, we will refund the unused portion.

Disclaimer of warranties

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, in which case they do not apply to you.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, neither Adwise Partners LLC nor anyone working with us is liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the service — including any decision you made in reliance on a grade.

Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred United States dollars.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or any right you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.

Indemnity

You agree to indemnify us against claims arising from your misuse of the service or your breach of these terms. This does not apply to claims arising from our own conduct.

Ending it

You can stop using PlainTerms at any time by deleting your account in the extension's settings and uninstalling the extension, which removes everything it stored on your device. We may suspend or terminate access that breaches these terms, and where it is reasonable to do so we will tell you why first. The sections on grades, third-party documents, warranties, liability, and governing law survive termination.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change materially affects your rights, we will change the effective date above and notify you in the extension before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the state and federal courts located in New York are the venue for any dispute. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live.

If any provision is held unenforceable, the rest remains in force.
